Common Recovery Mistakes After Surgical Tooth Extractions, and How To Avoid Them
sometimes require more recovery time than a simple tooth removal, especially when the oral surgeon must make an incision or remove bone. The first few days give the extraction site time to form a protective blood clot and begin healing. Following aftercare instructions can help patients avoid setbacks and recognize problems that need attention.
Common mistakes after surgical tooth extractions
While resting for a few days for recovery seems simple enough, there are a few bad habits that can set patients back. For example, rinsing forcefully or drinking through a straw too soon can disturb the blood clot that protects the empty socket. If the clot comes loose or breaks down, the exposed bone may cause a painful complication called dry socket. Therefore, patients should avoid vigorous rinsing, forceful spitting, and straws during the early recovery period. After the first 24 hours, gentle saltwater rinses may help keep the area clean, provided the oral surgeon recommends them. Patients should follow their specific instructions if the procedure requires additional precautions.
Returning to normal foods too quickly
Crunchy snacks, hard foods, and too hot of meals can irritate tender tissue or disturb the surgical site. Instead, patients should choose soft, easy-to-chew foods such as yogurt, eggs, or mashed potatoes while the area heals. Chewing on the opposite side may also reduce discomfort when appropriate. Once the numbness wears off, patients can gradually return to firmer foods as the surgeon advises.
Smoking or vaping during recovery
Smoking and vaping interfere with healing and increase the risk of complications after surgical tooth extractions. Like drinking through a straw, the suction may disturb the blood clot, while tobacco exposure can affect the healing tissues. Therefore, patients should avoid both during recovery and follow the surgeon's recommended timeframe. The same applies to alcohol, as avoiding it during early recovery is also advisable, especially when taking prescription pain medication. Those who may have difficulty avoiding tobacco, vaping, or alcohol during recovery can discuss this with the surgeon before the procedure, during a consultation.
Returning to strenuous activity too soon
Exercise, heavy lifting, and demanding physical work can increase bleeding or discomfort shortly after surgery. Patients should plan to rest on the day of the procedure and follow instructions about when to resume activity. Recovery needs vary with the complexity of the extraction, anesthesia, and overall health. Of course, taking prescribed or recommended pain medication exactly as directed can make rest more comfortable.
Ignoring symptoms that need attention
Mild soreness, swelling, and blood-tinged saliva can occur after surgical tooth extractions. However, pain that becomes severe after a few days, persistent heavy bleeding, fever, pus, or worsening swelling warrants a call to the office. Trouble breathing or swallowing, on the other hand, requires emergency medical care. Contacting the surgeon early allows them to check for infection, dry socket, or another complication instead of waiting for symptoms to worsen. That said, any necessary follow-up visits that the oral surgeon recommends are to ensure the patient is healing as expected.
